Vidya Bhawan Senior Secondary School is committed to the objectives of the institution, which though unchanged in the basics, have acquired modified renewed form with the passage of 93 years of its journey since its inception. The school, which was founded to be a centre for preparing such students who become responsible and rational useful citizens contributing to the making of a new India, is now under the onus of its cherished role in the midst of the present changed scenario in the field of education and society at large.

Vidya Bhawan School is a truly non-conventional learner-centered educational institution where sound educational philosophies lay the foundation of holistic development of a child’s character and personality.

Established in 1931, the school has grown to dimensions befitting the dreams of its founder. In its present form, Vidya Bhawan Senior Secondary School is providing a well co-coordinated programme of integrated education from Nursery to Senior Secondary level.

The school is managed by Vidya Bhawan Society, which is registered under the Societies Registration Act No. VII of 1941.

About Vidya Bhawan Senior Secondary School

Vidya Bhawan School was founded in 1931 by Dr. Mohan Singh Mehta, a pioneer and visionary of international stature in the field of education. Dr. Mehta drew his inspiration for starting a truly non-conventional, learner-centered educational institution from the Boy Scout Movement founded by Baden Powell. His long and close association with the Scout Movement in different parts of India and Britain convinced him that a dynamic teacher rooted in her culture and sound educational philosophies could lay the foundation of holistic development of a child’s character and personality.

A warm welcome to the website of Vidya Bhawan Senior Secondary School. Located in the heart of Udaipur, it is one of the oldest & largest schools of Udaipur. Vidya Bhawan was founded in 1931 by Dr. Mohan Singh Mehta, a pioneer & a visionary of international stature in the field of education. This school was established with a strong commitment to the quest for excellence in the field of education. Education means not merely acquiring bookish knowledge but also values which ensure that we leave this society and world a far better place than we found it. In keeping with this vision of our founder, the school endeavours to match academic excellence with good human value system & ethos, which are ingrained in the culture of the school since inception.

The school provides a well-coordinated programme of integrated education from Nursery to Senior Secondary level. It is a progressive school that aims at nurturing the inherent potential of each child so that they become responsible & well informed members of today’s rapidly progressing society. The school offers a wide variety of curricular, co- curricular & sports activities, art programs and workshops, etc. to enable the students to develop as a whole. Our sports facilities provide our students with the infrastructure necessary to home their sporting talents & make their mark in sports competitions from local to national levels. Nature trips (Vanashala) & hiking etc. are a regular part of school life. The School is located at one of the most picturesque locations in Udaipur, close to the historical and world-famous Fatehsagar Lake. The school has large play fields, clean green environs of gardens, parks and recreation grounds. The city is connected by Rail/Road and Air to Delhi, Ahmedabad and Mumbai. The altitude of Udaipur is about 600 meters above the sea level.

The school was conceived as a co-educational residential-cum-day-boarding institution. There are, at present, six hostels for boys and girls served by a large and well maintained dining hall and mess.

The School is designed to have the following sections:

  1. Nursery Section (Pre-Primary to Class H.K.G.),
  2. Junior Section (Classes I-V) and
  3. Senior Section (Classes VI-XII).

The overall co-ordination and direction of the school’s programmers and activities is carried out by Principal duly assisted by different In-charges and members of faculty and supporting staff.

Nursery Section

The Nursery section, situated on the main campus, has its well organized and well provided for infrastructural facilities suited to the needs of young toddlers, with its own sandpit, wading pool, rabbit house, jungle gym and gardens.

The nursery building has the distinguishing quality of having its unique architecture befitting the child’s psychology.

All efforts are made to put into practice all possible teaching methods in the Nursery school. Since, this venue is the formal beginning place of learning, utmost care is taken for balanced physical, mental, social and psychological froth in natural way. Learning by doing occupies an important place here. Love for nature and environment, which is one of the objectives of Vidya Bhawan, is inculcated in the small kids. 

Junior Section

The Junior School (1 to V) has a separate building located on the main campus. Studies and activities in the Junior School are especially organized to provide a smooth transition from Nursery to senior stage of schooling. When the students move to Junior school, they are given exposure to library, Science laboratory, computer lab in order to make them accustomed to all these in the process of natural learning.

Senior School

Here pedagogical strategies are given much importance to make the learning process scientific and natural. Group work, project work followed by presentation by the students in order to ensure maximum participation.

A fully equipped technical and fine arts section is housed in a separate building surrounded by trees and plants in their resplendent abundance. Closely located are one of the country’s first-ever scientifically designed school gymnasium and open-air-theatre.

The laboratories and workshops are abundantly equipped with workshop tools and machines as well as laboratory apparatus and equipment etc. Efforts are made continuously to develop a spirit of inquiry and learning-through-doing amongst the students.

There are separate labs -Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Geography. The labs are so big and rich that perhaps these are second to none in schools of Rajasthan.

The school has a well-equipped computer lab with latest machines of advanced configuration and Internet facilities to provide quality computer education for classes from III to XII.

Classrooms

There is adequate number of classrooms for children. The classrooms are spacious and airy. The classrooms are well maintained and well furnished.

Library

The school has a rich library equipped with about 15000 course books and reference books on various subjects. Magazines, journals and periodicals are subscribed in a large number in the library. Also, there is a big reading room. The library is regularly used by the students and faculty members. To make access to books easier for students and in order to inculcate the habit of reading among the students, class library system is operational in classes. The class library is managed mainly by the students of the respective classes.

Science Laboratories

There are separate labs for Physics, Chemistry and Biology. The laboratories are abundantly equipped with apparatus and equipment.

Computer Laboratory

The school has a well-equipped computer lab with latest machines of advanced configuration and Internet facilities to provide quality computer education for all from class III to XII. Computer and information technology has been made a compulsory subject from the academic year 2001-02 for Science stream at Senior Secondary level. Our faculty is fully qualified to provide the latest of knowledge and in the use of computers and application of information technology.

Music Room

Our school music room is fully equipped with musical instruments like harmonium tabla, piano, sitar etc.

Fine Arts Room

The fine arts room is well equipped and here the children learn drawing and painting.

Technical Section

A fully equipped technical section is housed in a separate building surrounded by trees and plants in their resplendent abundance. The children are here trained in various skills to make them self-reliant.

Playgrounds and Gymnasium

Vidya Bhawan school is known for its vast and enviable play grounds and courts, which are used daily by the students of our school. We have two big play grounds for football, Hockey, cricket and several courts for lawn tennis, badminton, volley ball etc. Besides, the school has a gymnasium for indoor games. Optimum use is done of all this sports infrastructure on daily basis.

Canteen and Mess

Canteen:- The school canteen provides fresh ,tasty and nutritious eatables on payment.

Mess:- There is a common mess for all the boarders. Food is cooked in most scientific hyginic and nutritious manner in a modern, well equipped kitchen with a large and spacious dining room

Hostels

Residential Facilities:

The school provides residential facilities for boys and girls on campus. All the hostels are well appointed and have the facilities that help the children live and grow in an environment that they can identify as their home. Trained staff members, including a housemaster, a matron and four wardens along with a whole range of support staff are entrusted with the well being of the children and to ensure that the needs of our pupils are fully met with. Hostel facilities are available both for boys & girls from class VI to XII in separate blocks.

The school places much emphasis on the importance of students taking responsibility for themselves, and for each other, within a very carefully supervised framework. For our boarders, the hostel is also home and as such provides every facility for study, leisure and a warm sense of community living which can add so much to school days and life later. The school strongly believes that the values of caring, sharing, and community living must be inculcated in our students from the very beginning. As the children move to senior classes, they are provided shared rooms.

Hostel facilities are available both for boys & girls from class VI to XII in separate blocks.

Admission in Hostels

The following are the general conditions for admission in hostels of Vidya Bhawan:

  1. The minimum age of admission to the hostel is 10 years,
  2. Seats are allotted as and when there is a vacancy in the school and the hostel
  • The application for registration should be made on the prescribed form, which can be obtained from the office on payment of Rs. 200.00 only,
  1. The registration fee is non-refundable and
  2. The students declared eligible for admission to the hostel shall be required to deposit the first installment of fees immediately, failing which the admission may be cancelled. They must join within three days of their being offered a seat in the hostel.

There are Six hostels there for boys and one for girls.

Hostels for Boys:-

  1. Lodha Niwas.
  2. Aravali Sadan.
  3. Calcutta Sadan.
  4. Jublee house

Hostels for girls:-

  1. Bharti Sadan.
  2. IASE Hostel

In the Junior and Senior sections as well as the Nursery section, the emphasis is on child-centered education and a child-friendly ambience. A healthy and pleasant environment supplemented by self-corrective and self-explanatory aids has a positive educational influence on the child’s development.

Crafts

The school also has a Craft room in which the students are trained in various crafts like Paper craft, collage making, best out of waste.

Vanshala (Open-Air-Session)

The open-air session of Vidya Bhawan has become a widely known activity for its distinct and remarkable educational value. In the Open Air Session, the students of the school are divided in two groups. First Group IV to VIII, Second Group IX onwards. All camp at different places for eight days, in the natural environment surroundings away from school. The idea is to provide opportunities to the students for intensive study of physical and socio-cultural environment of the camping site. Besides, the camp programmed also aims at developing power of independent thinking, self-expression and creative activity. The life in the camp has a potent influence and thrust on inculcating values and habits of community living among the young children of impressionable age group.

Anniversary Project and Pageant

The Anniversary Project is another major educational landmark of our school. It Inculcates and infuses creativity, original thinking and understanding of different cultures and the problems facing our times. In ultimate analysis, it helps develop intellectual and aesthetic capabilities of the students.

Under the Anniversary Project a theme is selected for comprehensive study of related areas and subjects in their multilateral dimensions. The students from Class III to Class XII are divided into different groups according to their aptitude and interest. Each group is then assigned a sub theme to work upon. They study the selected topic through a schedule of programme especially prepared for this purpose by the teachers. At the end of their in-depth studies, the groups display the work done by them through an exhibition of posters, charts, models, working models, etc. The exhibition is followed by a pageant (cultural programme) comprising skits, plays, ballets, dances, group dances, etc. woven around the theme of the project.

Camps and Hikes

Camps and hikes are a regular feature of school. It is compulsory for each class to go on hikes and camp over night with the purpose to establish love and attachment for nature.

 NCC and Scout

The school provides opportunities to its students to be a member of NCC & Scout programme. As such , the school has NCC unit of 50 students. Also, Scouting activity inculcates the sprit of service to humanity among the students for shaping the personality of the students Various co-curriculum are organized throughout the year. Such activities for over all development of the children include- debate competitions, Dance & music competition, Plays, Fancy Dress competition, Card making, Writing competition, Story telling competitions, Drawing competition, Rhyming competitions, Science Quiz and Model making competition.

 Celebrations

The following are the important functions that are organized in school.

Nursery & Junior section:-

  4. Annual Function.
  5. Different Festivals.

Special Assembly

The school starts with the Morning Assembly, which is sometimes held on the Flag hoisting ground and sometimes in the Assembly Hall. The students get full opportunity to express themselves there. Each class gets one week for the assembly programme.

The distinguishing feature of the morning assembly is the Saturday Assembly. On that day, the class presents some musical programme Besides, distinguished personalities from different walks of life are invited for speech and interaction on Saturdays in the morning Assembly programme.

Group System

Group system is the basic unit of life at Vidya Bhawan. For administrative purposes, the groups are formed by horizontal class divisions and each group is under the charge of one or two teachers. Other teachers or / and parents can address inquiries about a student to the group teacher, who whenever the need arises, shares and confers on the matter with the Principal and other experts. The group teacher maintains record files of students in his/her charge. A file affords ready reference and information regarding the student’s life in the school.

Rashmi Dal

Rashmi Dal is a group for providing guidance and counseling to girls. There are two groups in Rashmi dal — Junior Girls & Senior Girls. Junior Girls group is for girls studying in classes VI, VII, VIII and Senior girls group is for girls studying in class IX, X, XI and XII. There are different activities &hikes organized for these girls.

Education for Responsible Citizenship

There is a great deal of scope for boys and girls to organize activities of various kinds through House systems. They participate in discussions at all levels of planning and developing various programmes in an effort to improve their standards of attainment. Each House is given the responsibility to participate in maintaining the appropriate educational ambience in the school by rotation.

Guidance and Counseling Bureau

We have established a guidance centre in our school. The main function of this centre is to provide assistance to the students in the selection of courses and careers after they have finished their schooling. In addition to this, our counselors also help the students in solving their problems, which they might face in the school or in the life outside.

After School Programmes

The school runs unique programme for our students after the school hours as given below:

  1. Compulsory games (evening): Compulsory Evening games programme is run daily for two and half hours.
  2. Support Classes:- Support classes are run for Maths & English after the school.
  3. Computer Classes:- The school library and the computer Lab are kept open for two and half hours daily after the school time. The beneficiaries are the hostel students and also the students living In the vicinity of the school.

Support to the Students of Disadvantaged Sections

One of the important features of the school is that it takes special care of the students of economically and socially under privileged and disadvantaged groups. The school not only gives a special attention to the studies of the students but also gives support for their fees from the amount received from benevolent persons / bodies in the from of support as fees or scholarships. Out of such bodies, the Old Boys Association and Give India deserve special mention.

The school has trudged up the road of achievements in the past, consistently striving for betterment and has carved a niche for itself in the educational realm of Udaipur. The last years Board results are a testimony of the school’s academic excellence, with 100% results in XII Science, Arts and Commerce, and 96% in Class X Board.

Curriculum

Comprehensive Evaluation

In the evaluation system we not only take into account the academic growth of a student but also various aspects of her/his personality and character. The development of the child is monitored by the school periodically.

Medium

The medium of instruction is Hindi, but due emphasis is given to the teaching of English and developing proficiency in its use from the nursery stage itself. The school is affiliated to the Board of Secondary Education, Rajasthan.  

Subjects

In Nursery to HKG classes, special attention is given to teaching through bilingual approach.

Classes Nursery to HKG:– Hindi, English, Maths, Environmental Studies, Art and Craft , Dance and Music and Games.

Classes I to V:– Hindi, English, Maths, Environmental Studies, Art and Craft , Dance and Music and Games, Computer Science.

Classes VI to X:– Hindi, English, Maths, Science, Social Science, Sanskrit/ Urdu, Computer Science Raj. Studies , Art and Craft, Dance and Music and Games.

 

The following streams of subjects are available at the Senior Secondary level

Science Stream

  1. Compulsory Hindi and Compulsory English and
  2. Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics / Biology.

 

Agriculture Science Stream

  1. Compulsory Hindi and Compulsory English and
  2. Agriculture Science, Agriculture Chemistry, Agriculture Biology.

 

Humanities Stream

The students have an option to choose one subject each from the following three groupings

  1. History / Drawing & Painting,
  2. Geography and
  3. Advanced English / Advanced Hindi / Economics

 

Commerce Stream

  1. i) Accountancy (Compulsory)
  2. Business Organization (Compulsory)
  3. Mathematics Or Economics and Financial Studies (Optional)

Examinations and Promotions

The school examination system comprises three unit tests, Half Yearly and Annual Exam for classes I to IX and XI, For classes X and XII two unit test half yearly and pre board exam.

Promotion rules are the same as per the government rules.

The school provides facilities for most of the games and sports activities including Hockey, football, volleyball, basketball, lawn tennis, cricket, badminton, table tennis, etc. Intensive training and coaching is given in all these games, track and field events and athletics in a scientific manner by fully trained coaches and PTI’s. The school also has a well-equipped gymnasium comprehensively provided with equipments and apparatus of international standards.

Compulsory evening games are a regular feature of Vidya Bhawan our students play Hockey, football, volleyball, Cricket, badminton, lawn tennis & table tennis on regular basis.

In order to develop qualities of self-confidence, leadership, mutual understanding, co-operation,  public speaking as well as to foster healthy competition, the school is divided into Houses.

Activities are conducted under the supervision and guidance of teachers. Students share responsibilities as House Captains, Vice Captains, Head Boy, Head Girl, Vice Head Boy and Vice Head Girl.

Vidya Bhawan was established in 1931 and the first batch passed out in 1934. In the same year an old boys association was formed. The objective was to keep in touch with the alma mater and to promote the ideals of responsible citizenship, the cherished goal of Vidya Bhawan.

The idea and the name – Vidya Bhawan Vidya Bandhu Sangh – was conceived by the Founder of Vidya Bhawan ‘Bhai Sahab’ Dr. Mohan Sinha Mehta. He inspired the five first pass outs- Shri Abul Kalam, Shri Jeevan Mehta, Shri Mathuranath Pancholi, Shri Vishnu Dutt Sharma and Shri Yogesh Chandra Sharma- to establish the Sangh. The Constitution and By-laws were made and Vidya Bhawan Vidya Bandhu Sangh came into being in 1934. The first alumni cherished those moments for their entire life and some wrote about it in the issues of ‘Vidya Bandhu Mukhpatra’.

Vidya Bandhu Geet “Bachpan ka vah sang hamara” first echoed in 1947. Shri Dayal Chand Soni penned the song on 21st September 1947.

The earliest reference to Vidya Bandhu Mukhpatra, the annual journal of the Sangh, is of 1957. It used to be of two pages printed back-to-back. Shri Deen Dayal Dashottar, the then Editor, deputed his young student Shri Riaz Tehsin as Editor of Mukhpatra. One issue was published. After a gap of twenty-two years, Vidya Bandhu Mukhpatra was re-published in 1989; the Editor was Ms. Razia Tehsin and Joint Editor Shri Jag Mohan Dave. Since then, the publication of Mukhpatra has continued and in 2024 the Sangh brought out the 36th issue.

Registration

Application for admission should be submitted in the office along with necessary registration fee, which is not refundable.

Admission (test and interview)

The student will be admitted on the basis of an interview-cum-admission test subject to availability of seats. The subjects for the test are Hindi, English and Mathematics.

Documents required at the time of admission

A student, at the time of admission, will be required to produce the Transfer Certificate of the previous school where she/he studied last. The admission will be provisional for one year, which will be confirmed if in the opinion of the school the child is actually being benefited by the school. In this connection, the school’s decision shall be final and binding.

Admission in the middle of the session

The student admitted in the middle of the session will be required to pay the fee for the entire academic session

No Admission for Married Students

Married students are not admitted to the school, nor can one marry while studying at school. Any violation of this rule shall render the student liable to strict disciplinary action resulting in her/his expulsion from the school.

Age Limit for Admission

No student of higher than the average age of the class in which the admission is sought shall be admitted to that class in the school. Minimum age for admission to nursery is three years. Birth certificate issued by a competent authority shall be required to be produced in original along with the application for admission.

Punctuality and regularity

The school insists that the students must observe regularity and punctuality in attending the school throughout the session, from the very first day of opening of the school. The students who fail to do so are liable to be fined up to Rs. 5.00 per day and their names may be struck off the rolls for an absence of more than ten days without prior and proper sanction. Anyone going on leave must apply in advance. The application should be duly countersigned by the parents or guardians or House Masters, as the case may be. The student shall not be allowed to attend the school after unauthorized absence until and unless it is duly applied for giving valid reasons for the same.

Participation in sports and co-curricular activities

It is compulsory for every student to take part in games, group activities, camps, hikes and other co-curricular activities organized by the school.

Participation in Open-air Session (Vanshala)

Open air session or Vanshala is a unique educational feature of Vidya Bhawan with immense potential to provide learning opportunities in a natural, unstressed, child friendly, self-discovering and self-exploratory atmosphere. It also gives opportunity to help inculcate the sprit of peer group learning, community living, self-service, adventure and survival in the amidst of adversities and challenges.

Compulsory Attendance

No student shall be permitted to appear in the annual examination if her/his attendance is below 75 percent.

Cancellation of Admission

If a student is absent without permission from the school continuously for 10 days, her/his name shall be struck off the rolls. Re-admission of such students will be at the discretion of the Principal and on the payment of the admission fee of Rs. 100.00 and fine for remaining absent
